🌱 Rage-Bait Platformer

Garden Bait Play Garden Bait Online

A serene garden, a tiny sprout, and 20+ ways to die. Garden Bait is a punishing precision platformer where every death leaves a body behind, the narrator keeps a tally, and the exits might be lying to you.

What Is Garden Bait?

Garden Bait is a precision platformer by Big Vacuum Studio that turns failure into the main attraction. You play a tiny sprout descending through five increasingly cruel levels — The Descent, The Deeper Dark, The Abyss, The Void and The End — each one introducing new ways to die and new reasons to question your choices.

The visuals are calm and leafy, all soft greens and glowing crystals. That’s the bait. Underneath is a game built from the same DNA as Trees Hate You, Syobon Action and other trap games: platforms that vanish when you land on them, platforms that flee when you approach, and exits that aren’t exits at all.

The browser version here contains Level 1, The Descent, which is more than enough to find out whether you’re a Spike Magnet or a Void Walker. The full five-level game can be picked up from the developer on itch.io.

How To Play

  • Move: Arrow keys or A / D
  • Jump: Space, W or Up arrow

Jump height depends on how long you hold the button, so most of the game comes down to learning exactly how far a tap versus a hold carries you. Momentum is deliberately unforgiving on ice and conveyors.

The Traps

Garden Bait ships with more than twenty trap types and layers them as you descend:

  • Vanishing platforms – solid until the moment you commit to them.
  • Troll platforms – slide away as you approach; you have to bait them.
  • Crushers and popup spikes – timed hazards that punish predictable movement.
  • Conveyors and ice – mess with your momentum right before a precision jump.
  • Bouncy surfaces – launch you further than you wanted, usually into something sharp.
  • Fake checkpoints and bait exits (Level 5) – checkpoints that kill you and doors that teleport you backward. Only one of the final room’s four exits is real.

The Narrator And The Bodies

Two systems make Garden Bait feel different from a standard rage platformer:

Persistent corpses. Every death leaves a body that stays in the background of the level. By the end of a hard section you’ll be jumping over a pile of your own failures.

A sarcastic narrator. A dynamic commentary system tracks how you’re dying and responds accordingly. Die on spikes enough times and you’ll be labelled a Spike Magnet; keep walking off ledges and you’re a Void Walker. Finish a level and you get a detailed autopsy report — death counts, trap-by-trap breakdowns and a psychological evaluation of your play style.

Stand still too long and your sprout starts singing. Fall far enough and it screams all the way down. Land safely and you get a small, relieved “phew”.

Tips For The Descent

  1. Assume everything is a lie. A platform that looks safe probably isn’t. Test edges with a short hop before committing to a big jump.
  2. Watch a death, then use it. Each trap has a fixed behaviour. One death tells you the pattern; the second attempt should exploit it.
  3. Short taps on ice. Momentum builds fast; small inputs keep you in control.
  4. Don’t rush after a checkpoint. The game loves placing a trap immediately after a save point precisely because you’ll relax.
  5. Listen to the music. Each level has its own procedurally generated synthwave score, and it darkens as you go deeper — a useful cue that the traps are about to get nastier.
