What Is Sort the Court!?
Sort the Court! is a wildly popular indie kingdom management simulation game that proves complex strategy does not require complicated controls. Originally developed by Graeme Borland, Amy Gerardy, and Bogdan Rybak for the Ludum Dare 34 game jam in 2015 (which featured the theme “Two Button Controls”), the game has since evolved into a beloved browser classic.
In this charming, pixel-art adventure, you take on the role of a newly crowned King or Queen. Your royal duty is straightforward: sit on your throne and listen to the endless parade of subjects, creatures, diplomats, and bizarre entities that approach you with propositions, requests, and dilemmas. Your only method of ruling is deciding whether to grant their requests by simply answering “Yes” or “No.”
Despite this minimalist interface, Sort the Court! offers surprising depth. Every decision you make carries consequences that ripple throughout your kingdom. The game masterfully balances casual, relaxing gameplay with the addictive strategic challenge of resource management.
Core Gameplay Mechanics
The brilliance of Sort the Court! lies in its resource balancing act. To succeed as a monarch, you must keep a close eye on your kingdom’s three core metrics, which are displayed at the top of your screen:
The Three Royal Resources
- Population (Citizens): Represents the size of your kingdom. Many decisions will bring new people to your city or cause them to leave.
- Happiness (Smileys): The overall mood of your subjects. If happiness drops too low, your kingdom will struggle to grow.
- Treasury (Gold): Your royal wealth. You need gold to fund projects, pay for repairs, or occasionally bribe your way out of trouble.
The Ripple Effect of Decisions
Every “Yes” or “No” directly impacts these three resources. For example, a wizard might ask for 50 gold to perform an experiment. Saying “Yes” decreases your treasury immediately, but if the experiment succeeds, it might significantly boost your kingdom’s happiness and population later. Saying “No” saves your gold but guarantees no future reward. The challenge is learning which characters to trust and when to take risks.
Evolving Storylines
As the days pass, you will notice that certain characters return to your throne room. Your past decisions will influence their future interactions. Helping a humble fisherman early on might lead to him becoming a wealthy merchant who pays hefty taxes to your treasury. This interconnected storytelling makes the kingdom feel alive and responsive to your leadership style.
Sort the Court! Strategy Guide And Tips
Want to secure your spot on the Council of Crowns? Keep these royal strategies in mind as you rule:
Balance Is Everything
Do not focus entirely on hoarding gold or maximizing population. If your treasury is overflowing but your citizens are miserable, your kingdom will stagnate. Always strive to keep all three resources growing steadily.
Invest in the Future
Many characters will ask for a large upfront investment of gold. As a general rule, if you can afford the cost without bankrupting your treasury, say Yes to investments. Characters like the architect, the wizard, and the explorer usually bring massive returns in population and happiness over time, even if they seem expensive at first.
Learn to Say No
It can be tempting to be a benevolent ruler who says yes to everyone, but you cannot afford it. If a shady character asks for money with no clear explanation, or if an event risks hurting your citizens just for a small amount of gold, confidently say “No.” Protecting your population and happiness is often more important than a quick payout.
Watch the Daily Summaries
At the end of each in-game day, the screen will display a summary of how your resources changed. Pay close attention to this screen. It will help you identify which of your past decisions are currently generating passive income or draining your resources.
